We are pleased to announce Passing the Torch, the next free Bancroft Family Concert on Saturday, January 28, 2017. This concert pairs four Dallas Symphony Orchestra musicians with four musicians who are launching their own performance careers. Held in the Horchow Auditorium at the Dallas Museum of Art (1717 N. Harwood Street, Dallas 75201), the program begins at 3 p.m. with doors opening at 2:30 p.m. The concert is FREE TO THE PUBLIC with no tickets required.

Erin Hannigan, DSO principal oboe, and Nora Prener, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra oboe; Gregory Raden, DSO principal clarinet, and Sarah Demy, Midland-Odessa Symphony and Las Colinas Symphony clarinet; Haley Hoops, DSO french horn, and Katie Wolber, Dallas Opera horn; and retired DSO principal bassoon Wilfred Roberts and John Searcy, graduate of Southern Methodist University and the Yale School of Music, come together to play Franz Joseph Haydn’s Octet in F Major and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Serenade No. 12 in c minor, KV 388.

Ms. Hoops explains, “It is an honor to be a mentor. Katie studied with me for approximately four years as an undergrad student at SMU. She was always at the top of her class and an outstanding horn player.”

“Haley was the low horn specialist at SMU,” Ms. Wolber elaborates. “My low register was horrendous, so my main professor set up extra lessons for me with Haley. If it weren’t for her, I don’t think I ever would have improved enough to even get into graduate schools, much less win a job! I honestly think of Haley now as more of a colleague, though she’s always willing to listen to me play and give me advice, so I’ll also always think of her as a mentor. The first time I was deemed worthy enough to play with the Symphony – it was an experience I’ll never forget. Now I’m a little bit more used to it, but I know that anytime I play with someone from the DSO, I really need to bring my ‘A-game’ – they inspire me to play my best.”
