Join with us in welcoming Alex McDonald as Guest Festival Director for our 36th annual Basically Beethoven Festival, held in the Dallas City Performance Hall in July 2016. Dr. McDonald, a Dallas native, brings the same energy and passion he has as a professional pianist to the role of Guest Director.
“We look forward to the energetic creativity and musical expertise that Alex brings to the Festival,” says Rogene Russell, Artistic Director of Fine Arts Chamber Players. “We believe we’ve found a great balance between tradition and fresh ideas in putting together the event. Basically Beethoven 2016 promises to be an exciting month of July concerts for North Texas audiences.”
Alex is known to FACP audiences as he was a featured performer at the final 2015 Basically Beethoven concert on July 26. Not only did he play, but Alex put that day’s program together and selected the performers.
“Beethoven has been a guiding light to generations of musicians and composers. I’ve always felt that he, more than anyone else, embodies the human spirit, so full of passion and honesty and courage,” he explains. “Having this rich source of inspiration, I am excited to have the opportunity to direct this year’s Basically Beethoven Festival, as we look for new ways to connect musicians and audiences with timeless music from Beethoven and beyond.”
A sought-after pianist, Alex grew up in north Dallas where his musical training began. He competed in the 2014 Van Cliburn Piano Competition and was regarded as an audience favorite. In addition to performing internationally, Alex maintains a private piano studio. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory, and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Juilliard School.
