Dream Collectors - LD Zone Dream Collectors, provides programs about learning differences for children. The LD Zone is an innovative program to increase awareness of the challenges of dyslexia and encourage early diagnosis and intervention. Program Description: Dream Collectors will adapt its educational program, The LD Zone, into a play to be performed by high school students. Created by Dream Collectors in 1994, The LD Zone emphasizes the importance of learning to read with special information about dyslexia. This program teaches compassion, emphasizes teamwork, and promotes respect and reverence for life. Dream Collectors will serve as Artists in Residence at Shelton to launch the first public performance of the new version of this program. Each year, Shelton School plans to perform this new program for its students and their families and in schools throughout the Dallas area. Other schools, such as the Winston School and the Meadowview School have also expressed interest in performing this program. The Dyslexia Division of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children will serve as consultants for this project. Because approximately 15% of the general population has some degree of dyslexia, Dream Collectors believe that this project will bring an increased awareness of the challenges of dyslexia to encourage early diagnosis and intervention. At the conclusion of this project, Dream Collectors will remove The LD Zone from its current repertoire. This project ensures that The LD Zone will continue to be available to the public. Project Partners: Established in 1921 by the Scottish Rite Masons of Texas, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is a world leader in dyslexia evaluation and treatment. More than 300 school districts across Texas as well as fifteen other states and ten foreign countries use dyslexia material produced by the hospital. Founded in 1976, the June Shelton School is an independent, non-sectarian, coeducational, nonprofit school whose purpose is to provide excellence in education to learning-different children, preschool to grade twelve. Shelton is the nation's largest private school for learning-different students Created to bring the excitement and vitality of classical music into the classroom, Dream Collectors combines classical music, theater, poetry, storytelling, and dance into a multi-disciplined performance that transcends language, social and economic barriers. Even the most inexperienced concert audience member is captivated by the variety of artistic expression. Our company of professional musicians and actors has performed for over 160,000 children free of charge since our first performance in 1989. The Need: With a grant from the Meadows Foundation in 1994, Dream Collectors created The LD Zone to meet a need that was not addressed sufficiently in the educational system - understanding dyslexia. Since the first performance in October of 1994, Dream Collectors have presented 243 live performances free of charge for over 64,000 children in twenty public school districts, nine private schools, three community-wide concerts, four teacher training sessions, twenty-four special performances for literacy and dyslexia organizations, and two tours in Texas and in Colorado (hosted by the Aspen Music Festival). Nine years after its premier, The LD Zone continues to be requested by educators and schools. Dyslexia specialists from Houston and Brownsville have asked Dream Collectors to train The LD Zone performance troupes in their locations. Dream Collectors believe that The LD Zone carries such a powerful message that when the play is retired from the current Dream Collectors repertoire, it will be given a new and effective voice by dyslexic students at the Shelton School and others. Program Beneficiaries: In the first year, the Shelton School plans to present The LD Zone for over 3,300 students, family members, faculty and the general public. Performances are planned for Shelton Open House, which introduces the services of Shelton to potential students and their families and a spring tour to Dallas area schools. Shelton plans to repeat the performance annually and to tour the program in area schools each spring. |
