Gary Levinson

Gary Levinson, violin, enjoys a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Levinson began studying the violin at the age of five with Professor Sergeev at the Leningrad Special Music School. After immigrating to the United States in 1977, the Levinson family settled in Minneapolis where Mr. Levinson made his U.S. solo debut at the age of thirteen with the Minnesota Orchestra. Praised for his intense musicality and adroit technique by American and European critics, he was chosen by Zubin Mehta to join the New York Philharmonic before his graduation from the Juilliard School in 1988.  Mr. Levinson then made his New York Philharmonic solo debut in 1991. Hailed as “excellent” by the New York Times, Levinson earned his Bachelor’s Degree with Dorothy DeLay and his Master’s Degree with Glenn Dicterow at Juilliard. In December 2000, the Dallas Symphony chose Mr. Levinson as their Senior Principal Associate Concertmaster. In the 2007-08 seasons he toured throughout the United States with flutist Eugenia Zukerman and pianist Adam Neiman as a member of Trio Virtuosi. He has collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell, Christopher O'Riley and Anne-Marie McDermott. Mr. Levinson performs on a 1726 Stradivarius, graciously provided for his use by the Dallas Symphony. Mr. Levinson performed on the 2011 Basically Beethoven Festival.
